Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, widely known as NAPO, delivered a passionate address in Parliament on Monday, December 16, addressing the reactions to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) recent electoral defeat. NAPO firmly pushed back against suggestions that the election results represented a wholesale rejection of the NPP’s policies and called for pragmatic, bipartisan collaboration in the final parliamentary session.
Amid celebrations from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) following their decisive victory, NAPO emphasized the importance of recognizing the bipartisan foundations of much of the outgoing administration’s work. He rejected claims that the NPP’s policies were entirely dismissed by the electorate:
“It is unfair and entirely inaccurate to suggest that the NPP has been wholly rejected. The decisions we made and the legislation we pursued were rooted in the desire to advance this country, and the majority of these were met with consensus from both sides of this house.”
His remarks followed celebrations led by President-elect John Dramani Mahama and the NDC, where many viewed the election outcome as a repudiation of the NPP agenda. NAPO, however, called for a practical, non-partisan approach to legislative proceedings, stressing that governance must prioritize continuity over political grandstanding.
“The business of this house is not about personal victories or losses. It is about serving the nation. And to that end, we have already agreed on what needs to be addressed in this session.”
NAPO urged Parliament to consider the national interest when deliberating on pending matters. He questioned the necessity of pushing through contentious legislation in the final days of the current administration, arguing that the electorate had clearly entrusted the NDC with a mandate to “reset” the country.
“Let us adjourn these matters and allow the new government to advance the policies they promised the people.”
By advocating for such an approach, NAPO underscored the importance of respecting the will of the people while ensuring a smooth transition for the incoming administration.
