The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Edudzi Tameklo, has assured Ghanaians of strategic measures to lower petroleum product costs and provide much-needed relief amid ongoing fuel price hikes.
Tameklo’s pledge comes as consumers face significant price increases at the pump. For example, in January, state-owned GOIL raised petrol prices from GH₵14.99 to GH₵15.29 per litre, while diesel climbed from GH₵15.60 to GH₵15.77 per litre. Similarly, Shell adjusted its petrol price from GH₵15.30 to GH₵15.59, with diesel increasing from GH₵15.66 to GH₵15.79. These increases have been largely attributed to global crude oil price fluctuations and the continued depreciation of the Ghanaian cedi against major foreign currencies.
Speaking during a media interaction, Edudzi Tameklo outlined the NPA’s commitment to reforms aimed at stabilizing and ultimately reducing fuel prices.
“We are going to ensure the needed reforms. What I can assure the good people of this country is that Ghanaians will have cheaper and quality fuel,” Tameklo stated. “A whole team is exploring all avenues. For the ordinary driver and household, I can assure you that President Mahama is determined that you get cheaper, quality, and reliable fuel.”
The NPA’s efforts to tackle rising fuel costs align with its overarching mandate to regulate Ghana’s downstream petroleum sector effectively. By ensuring affordability, quality, and stability in fuel supply, the NPA aims to safeguard the interests of both consumers and stakeholders.
As Ghanaians continue to grapple with the economic impact of high fuel prices, Tameklo’s assurance offers a glimmer of hope for households and drivers seeking financial relief.
